Dear Friends,

It is with great sorrow that we write this letter to inform you that our dear friend, Sharon Feng, passed away yesterday from pancreatic cancer. Back in April, Sharon learned that she had pancreatitis and left for Shanghai to be with her sister, son and family. She made plans to undergo integrative treatments in China, so that she could return to California in the fall. When Joanna and other faculty members visited her in Shanghai, she spoke of her love of teaching and her plans of returning to Five Branches to be with her students.

Sharon Feng has been a major pillar of Five Branches' faculty and we will all miss her energy, straightforwardness and world-class teaching. We are sure that she continues to want her students and colleagues to learn this medicine well, to teach through stories, and to be compassionate with our patients. Her great qualities are reflected in the fine practices of Five Branches alumni, and in the health of her many patients.

We will be coordinating a memorial service and scholarship fund in honor of Sharon's life and achievements. If you would like to make a donation or send a gift, we will be forwarding details to you shortly.

With love and gratitude,

Ron and Joanna

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about Sharon. She was the first Doctor I saw at Five Branches, back in 2001, both in individual consultation, and in the theater, which I enjoyed, because I was able to listen to the diagnosis and explanation. This spring I was also seeing an intern (Josh S.) working with her, and was planning to go back this summer.
This is a reminder that people are not eternal, and not to take anyone for granted.

  3. I loved Sharon. All the teachers at Five Branches are terrific, but Sharon most of all was my favorite. She was both a caring and sensitive person, but also tough and practical. I am so sorry that she has passed away. I was planning to visit the US this summer and to stop by Five Branches to visit with her again. Sharon is my inspiration and my faith in humanity. I know her work well and have only praise for her talent, intelligence and dedication to life. She loved being a teacher and loved her work. If only we could live as Sharon lived, we could all be proud of ourselves. It is with great sadness that I heard of her passing. What a treasure is lost to the world.

  4. Sharon was a wonderful teacher, and her lessons will live on in each of us, her students. She was my very first teacher at Five Branches (Herbs 1), and one of my last, as my clinical supervisor. Her teaching style was kind, compassionate, and lively!

Her indomitable spirit will always be an inspiration to me. Sharon never gave up on anyone or anything, and she always encouraged me to do the same. She was an amazing woman on so many levels. I will always be so grateful to have learned from her, and to have known her.

  5. I remember sitting around in the herb room with Sharon for rounds and she said "My favorite movie is Babe, that pig is so cute!".

  8. Sharon was a superb doctor, as well as a very fun person. I had lived in Beijing as a student and we carried on in Mandarin sometimes when I was seeing her for menopause symptoms. When my energy was still low, she introduced me to the Qi Hai point - the ocean of energy inside, which was quite something! I'll always have wonderful memories of this outstanding person. - Jean Sibley
